Greystones AC News

Greystones AC

The past two weekends have seen our junior athletes perform on the big stage and come true with flying colours. On Feb. 6th & 7th we headed to Belfast for the Senior National Championships where several of our juniors stepped up to compete at senior level and did us proud. Ellie Hartnett went in the 1st heat of the 800m and put in a solid performance to finish , while Niamh Kearney went in heat 2 and finished 3rd in a new PB, qualifying for the final on Sunday. Sunday saw her run a fantastic race in the final to finish 4th overall and run a huge PB. Caoimhe Basquille competed in the HJ where she finished in 6th  position. Ferdia Kenny and Cormac Hanlon both competed in the 60m and 200m where Ferdia qualified for the ‘B’ final and finished in 3rd position. His other claim to fame is that he beat Paul Hession out of the blocks in the 60m. These are tremendous results for  junior athletes.

We followed this up by heading to Glasgow for the Scottish indoors where 10 of our athletes were on the Leinster team that competed on Sun 14th Feb. Once again we had terrific competition and great performances from all of our athletes. Ferdia Kenny, Patrick Costello and Isabel Malley all went in the U20 60m and 200m and all ran extremly well, with Ferdia eventually taking the bronze in the 60m. In the 800m Amy Howard and Claire Fox both went in the U17 and Ellie Hartnett and Aisling McGee in the U20 where Ellie won the silver medal. Niamh Kearney followed this by taking gold in the 1500m. Caoimhe Basquille finished 4th in the HJ and ran a PB in the 60mH in which Laura Boylan also had a good run.
