Greystones AC

Once again it was medals all the way for Greystones athletes over the last few weeks. On Sat. 12th we had the Leinster team competition in Greystones. We had 10 Greystones teams taking part with the boys U13 winning 1st by a huge margin, boys U10 & girls and boys U12 taking 3rd, girls U 13 and U11 taking 4th, with our second U11 team 9th and the girls U10  5th and 10th.

On Sat/Sun 19th/20th we were in Tullamore for the U13-U19 Leinster championships where we had some great results. At U13, Ara Freeman stormed to victory in the 80m and Rosa Kirwan finished 4th in the HJ, both qualifying for Nationals. The U13 boys sprint saw a terrific race where even the camera couldn’t split club mates Conor Dempsey and Jamie Fallon for 2nd place, with both boys receiving silver medals. Conor was also 3rd in the LJ and 4th in the 60m Hurdles, with Luke Donoghue 5th. Scott Howard had a great race in the 600m to finish 4th after a 2nd place finish in his heat earlier. Matthew Malone, Rosa Kirwan and Isabel Kenny all qualified for their sprint semi-finals. At U14 Lorcan Lalor was 3rd in the 60m hurdles and Cillian Browne was 6th in the 1500m and 7th in the 800m. U15 Aisling Moore was 4th in her hurdles and HJ. Claire Foley had yet another double, winning both the U16 100m and 200m and she and Amy Howard won bronze with the inter-county relay team. Amy finished 6th in both the 800m & 1500m, Eoin Taggart 6th in his 1500m and 8th in his 800m. Newcomer Sarah Healy was 3rd in the Discus with Lara Dawson Whelan 4th in her HJ. At U17 Claire Fox was 4th in the 800m and 6th in her 1500m. Caoimhe Basquille pulled off a hat trick at U18 winning the 100mH, HJ and Pole Vault. Jack Commons was 3rd in the Hammer and Jack Phelan 3rd in the Shot Putt. As always the U19’s were to the fore with Niamh Kearney 1st and Ellie Hartnett 2nd in the 3000m, Aisling McGee 1st in the 800m and Laura Boylan 1st in the 100mH. Niamh, Ellie, Aisling and Caoimhe represented Wicklow in the U19 relay and won the gold. The boys rose to this challenge, with Ferdia Kenny 1st in the 100m & LJ and 2nd in the 200m, Sean Ryder 1st in the Javelin and Cormac Hanlon 1st in the TJ and 4th in the 200m. Sorry if I’ve forgotten some results.
Best of luck to all who qualified for the All Irelands over the next couple of weeks.

Tues 22nd was the Bray Invitational Sports and we had a great turn out for the event. We had fantastic performances all round and the club won the overall cup by 156 points to 105 pts for DSD in 2nd. Well done to all the athletes and coaches, and thanks to all the athletes who took part in so many events on the night and to the seniors who got roped in to help build the points total.

On Sunday some of our older athletes were in action at the National Juniors (U20’s), where Sean Ryder finished 2nd in the javelin with a new PB of 48.44m. Niamh Kearney finished 2nd in the 1500m, with Ellie Hartnett  a close 3rd . Aisling McGee was 5th in the 800m, Caoimhe Basquille was 4th in the HJ and 5th in the 100mH and Laura Boylan was 5th in the 400mH. Next weekend sees the 1st of the National Juveniles , with Senior championships and League to follow, so our older athletes are in for a very busy time indeed. We wish them well in all their competitions and training.

The “Attendance Day Trip”, for athletes who have 50% or higher attendance during the year, took place on Sat. A group of about 50 athletes and coaches set off to the Zoo and  everyone had a really great day out. A big “ThankYou” to those who did all the organising and to those who went along to help out on the day.

We will have our usual training on Tues. 29th for all groups. The Wicklow team competition for athletes from U9-U15 is on this Wed evening 30th June, on the track in Greystones. Athletes intending to take part should be at the track by 6pm. This will be the last event for most of our younger athletes and the last session for the three younger (6-7pm) groups. Training will start again on the 1st Tuesday in Sept.  The Sen/Jun 5K/3K will also take place on Wed. night at 7.30pm. The next Fit4Life race is in Avondale on Wed 14th July at 7.30pm.
